I am a second year doctoral student in the Health Behavior Track of the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Public Health. Prior to entering the program I earned my Bachelor’s degree in International Studies from the University of Iowa in 2008, followed by my Master’s in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012. While pursing my MPH in Chicago I worked on several research projects focusing on childhood obesity and physical activity as a research assistant at UIC’s Institute for Health Research and Policy. This work allowed me to not only explore my interest in youth obesity research, but also advance my knowledge and skills in all of the phases of public health research. After completing my MPH I continued on at IHRP as the project coordinator of a national multi-site randomized control evaluation of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America mentoring intervention.
In the JDP program, Dr. “Suchi” Ayala serves as my mentor. Currently at IBACH, I am working on Dr. Ayala’s Our Choice Project, a multi-level multi-sector CDC-funded childhood obesity research demonstration study based in the communities of Imperial County, CA. Working on the Our Choice project has been an amazing opportunity to continue to pursue my own research interest in childhood obesity prevention and control. I look forward to continuing this work at IBACH and applying what I have learned from this opportunity in my research in the future.
